The earliest genealogies of the Mathesons come from stories told of yore.
The period from 1200 to the 1400’s is from traditional stories and some external documentation.
The 1400’s and 1500’s saw the clan divided with the branch marked by A. supporting the MacKenzies, the branch marked by B supporting the MacDonalds, and the branch marked by C fleeing to Caithness. As the chart shows, there were men in branch A and branch B both claiming the chiefship at the same time. Branch B eventually became the victor under Murchadh Buidhe.
